- Epiphany (현현, 顯現)
- Interactive Sound Sculpture (2023), Steel, Pine tree folding screen, Tactile Transducer, Wire, Amplifier.
- The Jing—a large ritual gong—and the byŏngp’ung—a folding screen used in ancestral rites—are both central to Korean spiritual practices, serving as mediators between the physical and spiritual worlds. While the byŏngp’ung sanctifies space by physically marking the boundary between the living and the dead, the Jing sonically opens a path to the divine with its resonant vibrations; together, they form complementary thresholds that fuse sound and structure into spiritual conduits.
- Epiphany combines the spiritual and physical aspects of the byŏngp’ung and Jing, utilizing their traditional roles to bridge the tangible and intangible. The installation features a sensor that converts the viewer’s voice into vibrations, stimulating the work to produce Jing’s resonant tone. Constructed from elemental steel, the work highlights resonant, ethereal and meditative sounds, with the material chosen for its ability to carry sound and symbolize unity between realms. Accompanied by a wooden stand, reflecting traditional Korean structures, the work invites interaction, allowing viewers to engage in a dialogue with the unseen, reflecting on existential themes through the lens of sound and space. This experience, set within a gallery, transcends cultural barriers, offering a universal exploration of spiritual communication. Hierophany encourages visitors to ponder their own existence and how we communicate with the world beyond our immediate perception through sound and space as the carrier of spiritual essence.
